Given the outages on the number of machines I've seen on their network, I'd guess they're upgrading and/or replacing hardware after review of their stress tests. Nobody likes an uptime disruption and I have a strong intuition that GW2 will be running on the same machines which host GW1 (undoubtedly in the same datacenter cage, anyway). I believe what may be going on is future proofing the hardware end of things for us to enjoy the same reliability as GW1 has provided.

I did get my weapon. Tormented shortbows sure are strange looking.

Emergency maintenance sounds more like a server died than a planned upgrade or anything. It's not like you can really predict those.

Other possibilities include some really bad bug that was discovered; don't want people to crash the servers or dupe or w/e.

Same problem. Just happened today on three different characters, at three different zones, on two different accounts. >_<

Apparently GW and GW2 share login servers or something. The heavy traffic in GW2 is mucking things up in GW.

Also, http://wiki.guildwars.com appears to be down right now.
